Land Looking Barren and Isolated; Snow on Mountain Peaks
Drinks and titbits served before lunch. Herring, lettuce, boiled egg, shrimps; beef and noodles with side salad; a creamy sweet with orange sauce; rye bread, butter, cheese and coffee. Captain announces we are passing Aeroflot plane that was the cause of our delayed takeoff. Pass over Mongolia and Siberia; flight information gives outside temperature as minus 74 degrees F; traces of frost on plane windows. Air very clear so good views of land below looking very barren and isolated. Small areas edged with white...frost ? or salt ? Wide twisting river flows through plains, splits into many streams, then they all join up again. Snow capped mountain peaks.TV screen in plane cabin show film so take short nap, not very successfully.
Three hours after lunch, stewardess brings sandwiches, cakes, and cold drinks; have cheese and ham double-decker sandwich and glass of orange juice, just to pass the time away! Overtake 737, hundreds of metres below, seemingly on same route, flying over sea of low white cloud base, dazzling in the sun. Passing over Baring Straits, 39,000 feet below; seems very rough with many snowy white horses riding the waves.
Dinner served between St Petersburgh and Copenhagen; Smoked ham, lettuce, tomato; chicken, rice, snow peas,bread roll; ice cream topped with slice orange and cherry. Start to reduce altitude 30 minutes before touch down. Our monster lands smoothly. In the few minutes taxing to gantry, 1x747 and 1x737 landed, and 1x737 took off. Check-in to Manchester flight near to entrance of complex and get window seat, which turns out to be BETWEEN two windows; view very restricted. Take off on time; 10 mins later meal served of three open sandwiches, a dish of creamy sweet, and coffee. Arrive Manchester and go and collect case...... missing! Make enquiries and fill in form; case probably still in Fankfurt, and will be sent to me by Courier when located. Quang waiting at exit thought I had missed the plane. Man at exit worried by none arrival of young girl expected to be on plane. Back home 8:30 pm; now about 10 hours behind sleep time. Bed at 10 pm but up again at 2:30 am drinking warm milk and eating mince pies.
